ROAD 47 DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN SAND

Summary: In response to directives from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister to urgently alleviate traffic congestion in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning has begun redeveloping Road 47 in Sanad, located between the capital and the southern governorates in blocks 646 and 745.

The development includes the expansion of Road 47 to two lanes in each direction from the intersection of Istiqlal Highway to Road 77. Road 47 is a main entrance to Sanad from Riffa and Isa Town, and leads to one of the most important commercial streets in Jid Ali and Sanad.

The works include the construction of a rainwater drainage network and pavements for pedestrians, as well as the installation of lighting and signs to improve safety on the highway. Safety barriers will also be installed in certain areas.

The ministry noted that the Road 47 project will double the capacity of the road and reduce the waiting lines on Road 47 by 35 per cent. The road is presently used by about 26,000 vehicles per day in both directions and accommodates an average of 2,700 vehicles per hour at peak times.
