Based on the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, to find prompt solutions to alleviate traffic congestions and enhance traffic flow in various regions in the Kingdom, the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning has completed the implementation of the southern side of Nasser Bin Jabr Al Jabr Avenue expansion works in Seef District.

The project included road expansion of an additional lane in the southern side of Nasser Bin Jabr Al Jabr Avenue for incoming traffic from the west of Street 40 to King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussain Avenue with a length of 1.25 kilometres.

It also included the removal of services obstructing the expansion progress by the other service departments including electricity and water, and development of the previous rainwater drainage system, reconstruction of sidewalks for pedestrians, modernization of street lighting, replacement of old lighting poles with new ones to cover the new lane, installation of suspended traffic signs and the necessary instruction billboards, painting land lines to achieve the required safety and security on the road, and installation of safety barrier wherever required.

The ministry said the project will reduce of the traffic congestions in Seef District due to increased urbanization and economic boom witnessed at the commercial malls. It pointed out that the daily traffic volume on this street currently serves 10,000 vehicles per hour heading west. At peak hours, the traffic volume on the same road reaches more than 3,000 per hour and reaches 5,200 vehicles per hour in the afternoon. It also ranges from 5,100 to 5,800 vehicles per hour at its peak in the evening.

The expansion project will boost the intake capacity at the western entrance of the Street 40  to 2,000 vehicles per hour which will improve the traffic flow and reduce waiting time on the Seef Bridge's Intersection.

On the other side, the intake capacity of Nasser Bin Jabr Al Jabr Street Intersection with Road 2827 will increase by 36% whereas the intersection will operate at highest efficiency.

The King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussain Avenue's intersection with Nasser Al Jabr Street will increase the intake capacity by 14% where the waiting queues reach nearby intersections.

It is worth mentioning that this project has been implemented within a short duration as part of Bahrain's comprehensive road network expansion plan commensurate with the urban expansion and increasing vehicle numbers. The second package includes 15 projects that will alleviate the traffic congestions on the main roads and intersections.

The ministry expresses thanks to the road users for their cooperation, compliance with the traffic instructions and warning signs, and observing the special diversions and alternative roads provided by the ministry during the project's implementation period.
