Engineer Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Minister of Works, announced the commencement of bridge deck casting works as part of the Bahrain International Airport Access Roads Project – Phase 3A, which has now reached 47% completion.
The announcement came during an inspection visit by the minister to the project site, attended by Engineer Shaikh Mishal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Works, Engineer Hamad Ibrahim Baddo, Director of Roads Projects and Maintenance, Engineer Ammar Abdulla Al Saffaf, Director of Roads Planning and Design, and a number of ministry engineers.
The minister affirmed that the project is one of the Kingdom's strategic infrastructure initiatives aimed at developing the road network, improving its efficiency, and enhancing traffic flow in Muharraq Governorate. He noted that the project includes the construction of a free-flow left-turn flyover along Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue at its intersection with Arad Highway, which will improve traffic movement and reduce travel time for road users.
He added that the project will enhance traffic flow along both Arad Highway and Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue, strengthen infrastructure capacity in line with population growth and urban expansion, and facilitate easier access to Bahrain International Airport and its various facilities.
Al Hawaj explained that Phase 3A includes comprehensive development works comprising the rehabilitation of the intersection and sections of Arad Highway and Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue within the project area. The phase also includes the upgrading of the existing marine bridge on Arad Highway by widening the waterway crossing over Arad Bay to improve water circulation and support the protection of the area's natural ecosystem.
The project also includes landscaping and beautification works, as well as the construction of a modern stormwater drainage network in accordance with approved engineering and environmental standards, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and Bahrain Economic Vision 2030.
The minister affirmed that the Ministry of Works continues its efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow across the Kingdom's main road network. Upon completion of the project, the capacity of the intersection is expected to increase from 5,250 vehicles per hour to approximately 16,000 vehicles per hour.
The Ministry of Works had previously completed Phases 1 and 2 of the projects, which included the reconstruction and widening of Road 2403 opposite the new airport terminal to three lanes, together with a service road, extending from its intersection with Airport Avenue to the northwest to its intersection with Arad Highway to the southeast.
