Engineer Shaikh Mishal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Works, announced that the ministry has commenced Phase One of the Road 96 Development Project in the Southern Governorate. The first phase covers the section extending from its intersection with Al Muaskar Avenue in the north to just before its intersection with Road 49 in the south, spanning approximately 2 kilometers. The project forms part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to develop infrastructure and enhance the efficiency and traffic flow of the Kingdom of Bahrain's road network.
The undersecretary explained that Phase One includes widening the road to two lanes in each direction, upgrading the intersections along the route, constructing pedestrian pavements, installing a stormwater drainage network and a new street lighting system, and providing the necessary traffic safety features. The works also include the installation of a treated water pipeline for irrigation purposes, as well as landscaping and beautification works along the road in line with the national greening plan.
He noted that the project will increase the road's capacity from 1,800 vehicles per hour under the current configuration to 4,800 vehicles per hour upon completion, representing an increase of approximately 167%. This will contribute to improving traffic flow, enhancing the efficiency of the road network, and raising safety standards along the road.
The Ministry of Works called on all road users to cooperate by adhering to warning signs, directional signage, and traffic diversions throughout the implementation period to ensure their safety and that of the workforce. The ministry also affirmed its commitment to providing alternative traffic solutions to maintain smooth traffic movement during the construction period.
The project was awarded by the Tender Board to Kingdom Asphalt Company for implementation.
