As part of their continuous efforts to enhance the quality of services in the construction sector in Bahrain, the Ministry of Works has recently launched a new electronic system to evaluate construction products and materials (eMAS), which enables suppliers and factories to apply for product evaluation to make sure that they conform to the Ministry’s specifications.

 

Materials Engineering Director Eng. Sameer Affouni explained that coordination takes place with engineering directorates in order to make sure that materials used in projects are compatible with the specifications previously agreed upon in roads, sanitary and construction projects that the Ministry supervises. This is done through certified procedures that include assessment of new projects to guarantee that all parties involved in any project; namely the contractor, consultant, supervisor and supplier, commit to the specified quality measures and requirements.

 

‘The new system (eMAS) is managed by the Consultations and Researches Section; belonging to the Materials Engineering Directorate. The system aims to evaluate the new products and materials likely to be used in MoW’s future projects to ensure compliance with quality specifications and that they are environmentally safe and friendly,’ said Affouni.

 

‘The electronic service allows the supplier to register the request through a user account on MoW’s page www.works.gov.bh or the eGovernment Portal www.bahrain.bh, after which he can provide the needed data and information on the product to undergo evaluation. If the product turns out to be compatible with the Ministry’s measures, it is then initially certified and enrolled within a database that engineering directorates can refer to.’ he added.
