The Ministry of Works has announced the commencement of construction works for Phase 3B of the Bahrain International Airport Access Roads Development Project. This phase forms part of the ongoing efforts to develop and enhance the efficiency of the road network surrounding the airport, contributing to smoother traffic flow and easier access to airport facilities.
In this regard, H.E. Eng. Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Minister of Works, stated that the project builds on the previous phases of the development of the roads leading to Bahrain International Airport. He emphasised that the Ministry continues to implement infrastructure projects in line with development priorities and traffic requirements, with the aim of enhancing the efficiency of the road network and improving the level of services provided to road users.
His Excellency explained that Phase 3B primarily involves the construction of a U-turn bridge at the intersection of Arad Avenue and Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue. The bridge will serve traffic exiting the airport via Road 2403 and Arad Avenue, enabling vehicles to travel westbound towards Arad, Al Hidd and other areas.
The works also include widening Arad Avenue and Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue, as well as improving traffic flow by removing several traffic signals. These include the signals at the intersection of Arad Avenue and Road 2403, the intersection of Arad Avenue and Sheikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Avenue, and the intersection of Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue and Road 2403, near Arad Bay. The project also includes the construction of a stormwater drainage network and the implementation of various infrastructure utility works.
The Minister noted that the Bahrain International Airport Access Roads Development Project is one of the key projects aimed at enhancing the road network and major intersections surrounding the airport. It is designed to accommodate the growth in traffic and passenger volumes while providing more efficient access to the passenger terminal and its associated facilities and services.
His Excellency affirmed that the Ministry will continue to implement road network development projects to enhance efficiency, improve road safety and ensure smoother traffic flow. He also commended the support extended to infrastructure projects in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
He added that the Tender Board had awarded the project to a consortium comprising Nass Contracting Company and Nasser Hazza Al Subaie.
Phase 3B builds on Phase 3A, located at the intersection of Arad Avenue and Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue, as part of the Bahrain International Airport Access Roads Development Project. Phase 3A includes the rehabilitation of the intersection and sections of Arad Avenue and Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue, the construction of a new free-flow left-turn bridge along Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue at its intersection with Arad Avenue, and the upgrading of the existing water crossing along Arad Avenue.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Works has previously completed Phases 1 and 2 of the project. Phase 1 involved reconstructing and widening Road 2403 opposite the new airport terminal building to three lanes, in addition to constructing a service road. Phase 2 involved converting the VIP Roundabout into a signalised intersection.
