HE the Minister of Works Eng. Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf received at his office HE Sh. Abdulla bin Rashid Al Khalifa, the Southern Governor, where they discussed a number of infrastructure related issues in various areas at the Southern Governorate.
 
Present at the meeting were Sanitary Engineering Assistant Undersecretary Khalifa Al Mansoor, Roads Acting Assistant Undersecretary Raed Al Salah, and Media & Community Service Head Hafedh Abdulghaffar. A number of issues were highlighted, including the construction of a road especially dedicated for bicycle amateurs and athletes. The project, which has the blessing of HH Shaikh Naser bin Hamad Al Khalifa the Head of the Olympic Committee, has been assigned to the Ministry of Works to study. The proposed road extends from Riffa Fort to Bilaj Al Jaza’air at a length of 25,5km. Studies also include preparing preliminary cost and designs for the project, and determining the traffic safety requirements to provide a 3 meter wide passageway.
 
The meeting also referred to the expansion of Wali Al Ahad Highway; the part located between the Clock Roundabout on Sh. Salman Highway and Buri Roundabout. The Roads Sector has prepared a scheme to expand the highway from 2 lanes to 3 lanes on each direction. Detailed designs for the project are presently being finalized in coordination with the Electricity & Water Authority, in order to solve any conflict with existing services and ground cables. The project is included within the 2014 roads program.
