MoW’s Assistant Undersecretary for Construction Projects and Maintenance Mohammed Hussain Al Mubarak visited Khalifa bin Salman Port to inspect the additional infrastructure maintenance works presently taking place.
 
The fire-fighting system is currently being upgraded to comply with the new requirements of the General Directorate of Civil Defence. The BD 843,000 contract was awarded to M/s Bokhowa Group. Work commenced on 8th June 2011 and is scheduled for completion in April 2012. Royal Haskoning/ACE-Almaoyed Consulting Engineers are the Consultants of the project.
 
‘The Work comprises the installation of additional water tanks, pump rooms, associated pipe works and ancillary works to feed the sprinkler system in the existing Container Freight Station, Workshop and Transit Sheds,’ said Al Mubarak. Al-Mubarak noted that the work is being carried out in close coordination with the Port Operators so as to ensure minimal disruption to port operations. The inspection team included representatives from General Organization for Sea Ports, Port Operators, Consultants, Contractor, Public Relation & Media Directorate and Strategic Projects Directorate.
 
The Khalifa Bin Salman Port at Hidd, which was put into operation in 2009, is capable of accommodating large vessels with deep drafts, cruise ship traffic and has provided the site for the Bahrain Free Trade Zone. The overall project was implemented through a number of contract packages, namely; the Dredging, Reclamation & Marine Works, Port Infrastructure and Port Buildings Contracts. In addition, the Phase 1 dredging of the 65km Bahrain Approach Channel was completed in February 2010 at a cost of BD 11.4 million.
