The Ministry of Works has won the “Breaking the Barrier" Leadership Award in Procurement Systems for its electronic contractor prequalification service. The award was presented at the second edition of the Middle East Procurement Conference 2020, held in the United Arab Emirates and organized by Messe Frankfurt, with the support of Bahrain's Tender Board.

The conference aims to celebrate achievements in the procurement industry across the region, with the participation of 19 governmental and non-governmental entities from various countries.

This award represents recognition of the successful transformation of the prequalification and procurement system from a labor-intensive manual process into a fully automated service that enhances value delivery, reduces bureaucratic procedures, and serves as an additional source of revenue for the Ministry through increasing the number of qualified contractors. Moreover, the online information technology systems provide virtually unlimited scalability, flexibility for system expansion and capacity growth, and round-the-clock service availability, facilitating the submission of applications and receipt of feedback with ease and efficiency.

The prequalification and procurement system is a genuine technological innovation developed in-house by the Ministry using qualified and competent Bahraini human resources. Its benefits became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the safe facilitation of business transactions could only be effectively achieved through digital platforms.
