As part of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning' concern towards designing and supervising mega projects for various entities and ministries in the Kingdom, Works Affairs Undersecretary of the Ministry Eng. Ahmed Al Khayyat visited Malkiya Primary/Intermediate School for Girls in Malkiya, which is part of the Gulf Development Program.
During the visit, which was also attended by Construction Projects Director Eng. Wadeea Marzooq and a number of from the Ministry, Al Khayyat stated that Ministry is close to completing the foundation works on the school's main building. The sub-power station has been completed, while the overall progress in the project is presently 57%. Work is underway to complete the settlement of elevations and the paving of the road in front of the school's entrance. During the coming few days, internal and external finishing works will commence. Al Khayyat directed the team in charge of implementation to speed up work and increase labour on site and working hours to ensure completion and handing over of the school to the Ministry of Education by the end of the year.
Al Khayyat reiterated that the Ministry is keen to carefully follow-up projects included within the Gulf Development Program. He also added that the Ministry has carried out the design and supervision of the project, which is funded by the Saudi Development Fund. The BD4,490,972 project was awarded to the Bahraini-Saudi Contracting Consortium of Sahara Contracting & Projects Constructions.
The Government has allocated a piece of land of an area of 15,876m2 for the school, which has been constructed over an area of 16,626m2. The school building comprises of a main building of 36 classrooms, 22 of which are dedicated for the intermediate stage while 14 are dedicated for the primary stage. The school has the capacity to accommodate 1260 students, in addition to 114 staff from both the educational and administrative faculty.
The school's main building includes multi-purpose laboratories for science, computer, home sciences, and physics, in addition to a cafeteria, a library, offices for the teaching and administrative faculty, sports hall, other service facilities such as toilets and store rooms. A separate building houses pottery, porcelain and agriculture workshops, in addition to a guard room, water tanks room, external fence, external works and electricity sub-station.
Al Khayyat explained that the school building has been designed based on the latest MoE's requirements, which include sustainability, green buildings and energy saving measures; such as thermal insulation for roofs and walls, double-glazing windows to reduce noise, sensor taps in bathrooms, energy saving lighting systems, acoustically insulated vinyl flooring, and paints with low volatile and anti-carbon organic compounds to paint walls internally and externally.
The design also takes into account providing all the facilities needed for students and staff with special needs and also pregnant women, such as constructing a special parking lot close to the main school entrance, providing slopes on all entrances, using non-slip vinyl flooring in all rooms, corridors and stairways, in addition to providing 4 elevators close to all entrances and toilets with a size that properly accommodates the needs of those students.
43 Parking spaces will also be provided for staff and visitors, in addition to a bus-stop.
