The Ministry of Works participated in HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Arabian Horse Racing Cup Festival for People with Disabilities; being a fundamental partner in the National Plan & Strategy for the rights of people with disabilities in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Ministry’s participation is based on its belief in justice and equality, and the disabled’s right to have proper education, health services, job opportunities and other rights. The Ministry strives to achieve such principles and merge people with disabilities in society; in collaboration with all the concerned ministries and national organizations. In its participation, the Ministry showcased photos of the main projects serving people with disabilities. In the roads sector, the Ministry highlighted the electronic device that was installed on the traffic signal along Salmaniya Avenue opposite to Salmaniya Medical Complex, and also along Al Fordah Avenue close to the parking lot near the Regency Hotel.

The device allows the blind and anybody suffering from sight weakness to safely cross the road. Also, a new type of cobble has been implemented on the pavements leading to the traffic signals on both locations; where the new cobble contains protrusions that distinguish these pavements from the rest and help the blind find the crossing point safely and easily. Special parking spaces have also been created for people with disabilities. On the building and construction level, the Ministry of Works highlighted the building projects that consider the main needs for people with disabilities at the design stage, such as the sports hall for people with disabilities at the Isa Sports City, and the Comprehensive Disability Complex Project, which the Ministry will implement for the Ministry of Social Development as part of the Gulf Fund Projects.

The project aims to provide all kinds of rehabilitative and therapeutic services to people with disabilities in all Kingdom’s Governorates; within 10 specialized centers in one geographical location. Highly qualified and specialized people will work at the complex to attend to different kinds of disabilities distributed amongst sections, each of which will serve a certain kind of disability. Other sections at the complex will feature Physiotherapy and psychotherapy, a library, health club, psychological support centre, measurement, evaluation and diagnosis centre, disabled products marketing centre and administrative buildings. The Assistant Undersecretary for Building and Maintenance Projects Eng. Mona Al Motawa represented the Ministry of Works at the symposium that took place on the sidelines of the festival in Rami Grand at the Seef district, where she shed light on the Ministry’s role and efforts in providing facilities and services for people with disabilities at the roads and construction sectors
