MoW’s Roads Planning & Design Director Kadhim Abdul Latif revealed that the Ministry is presently implementing a new type of traffic signal lights known as Light Emitting Diode (LED), which is the latest in traffic engineering field. The new lights consume less than quarter of the energy consumed by the present traffic signal lights. According to Abdul Latif, the initiative goes on line with the Government’s efforts towards energy conservation. ‘The Ministry of Works will implement the project over 2 phases. BD479,820 Phase 1 consists of replacing the lights of 130 traffic signals, where 45% progress has been achieved by replacing the lights of 86 signals so far,’ said Abdul Latif. ‘Phase 1 is expected to complete in the 3rd quarter of this year. Phase 2, which will commence once phase 1 is completed, consists of replacing the lights of another 94 traffic signals,’ he added.
