The Model Sports Clubs project was initiated by the General Organization of Youth and Sports in the intention to provide a community service, recreation and sport training and support interclub sports leagues for various sports.
Each club will have different components depending on their requirements such as a club house, gymnasium, sports hall, football pitches, external sports courts, guardhouse and the associated external works and services. It is designed to allow for the construction of the clubs on phases depending on the requirements of each phase.
The project was designed by Ismail Khonji Associates in association with Leigh and Orange Ltd of Hong Kong who specializes in the design of sports facilities projects. The total budget allocated for the project is BD 15 million.
The project is overseen by the Ministry of Works management team. The construction of Riffa and Al Shabab Sports Clubs were completed in June 2006 and August 2007 respectively. Work has started in Sitra and Al Najma Sports Clubs in October and November 2007 respectively.
